Peace Be Upon You. My brother Imran installed Ubuntu 12.04 on his laptop(even though he came with the intention of getting Windows 7 installed). It is a worthwhile upgrade from his old OS, Windows Vista. Only one week has passed since I installed Ubuntu on his laptop and he has gotten comfortable with Unity, Gnome-Shell and Gnome Classic(likes Unity the most) already.
It is really interesting to see how immersed he is now in the Linux and FOSS environment. He will be leaving for his city(Calcutta) tomorrow, so made the video in a hurry. Also the fact that we had just returned after a great dinner also didn't help either.:-).

If it's a Live CD, have you selected the 'Try Ubuntu without making changes to your computer' option, just to verify that it boots? A couple more questions. Which model number is your Presario? From this (you may have to click on the 'Laptops/Tablets/Notebooks(48)' to find your laptop), there seem to be a lot of different 'R3000's.
A bit further down, I mentioned that there might be BIOS updates available which will fix any issues you're having. So, you'll want to check the product information from this list. If you're using the LiveCD and you can boot to the Live CD portion (and use Ubuntu for a while), then I would suggest using an alternate installer to complete your install. You can find it. I've had a few systems where it worked better to use the alternate install CD instead of the Live CD. At least in the older versions of Ubuntu, you had to install with the 'linux noapic' command. One other post that I found mentioned checking at Compaq (HP for now) for any BIOS updates that might fix some issues.
