A bit of a niche topic, but, about the Oprahfication of 'women's culture' hit a nerve with me, and helped me clarify what I'd been sensing was wrong with the media targeted towards my age group. While it's technically a news article, reads more like an essay, and it's still one of the more powerful pieces of writing that I've encountered. I was lucky in that when my kids were first diagnosed with autism, one of the first pieces I read was, by Jim Sinclair. More than anything else that I read in those first few years, it helped me to focus on my kids (not just on their autism), and to treat it as a diagnosis, not a tragedy.
And while I'm not usually a David Foster Wallace fan, I loved (pdf) • • • •. TWIRLING AT 'OLE MISS, Terry Southern (satire, dark humor, funny, social commentary, witty, atmosphere, personality of writer) THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED, Hunter Thompson (wild, crazy, verbal pyrotechnics) HOW I EDITED AN AGRICULTURAL PAPER, Mark Twain (writing humor, journalism) NOTES ON THE BALINESE COCKFIGHT, Clifford Geertz (academic yet warmhearted, intimate setting, light-hearted, outsider being accepted) THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS, Albert Camus (epic, moody, serious, tragic, meaning, purpose) • • • •. If you're intrigued in what the essay can as a literary form then can't suggest Joan Didion and David Foster Wallace enough. Both are, in my humble opinion, the two preeminent essayists of the latter half of the 20th-century. If I were you I'd go pick up Wallace's essay collections A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, and Consider the Lobster. Stand-outs include 'Big Red Son,' Wallace's account of the AVN awards, which is as hilarious as it is disgusting and maddening; 'E Unibus Pluram: Television and U.S.
