In short, DO NOT LET IBM tell you that you need to buy a new license. If you license is still valid, then they can not make you buy a new one. You can use your current license to go from 5.3 to 6.1.
The compiler will be 'broken' if you run xlC/C++ v5.3 on AIX 6.1.and you will renew your costly license when your current one expires. I can't send you a link for the latest version, because it is sitting behind 'passport advantage'. You can search for 'IBM XL C Enterprise Edition for AIX' to find the door to the software on IBM's website.
